Tony Cliff is a busy professional performer either playing solo piano or playing and singing. He is a resident musician at both Penmere Manor Hotel in Falmouth and the Headland Hotel in Newquay and currently undertakes over 200 music engagements each year. In 2001 he recorded a CD of songs and instrumentals called Summertime Swing. Due to the popularity of this initial CD recording in 2003 Tony recorded a new instrumental CD entitled Cornish Blue - a collection of 7 original compositions and 7 standards presenting mellow jazz piano with just a hint of Cornish flavour. Whilst this CD features piano as the principal instrument, most tracks also include rhythm section and other accompanying instrumentation. In 2004 Tony recorded a CD of selected classics from the Great American Songbook for solo piano. This CD entitled Piano à la Carte is a collection of classic tunes by composers such as Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Hoagy Carmichael, Harry Warren and Richard Rogers. The CD is an ideal selection of cocktail jazz classics and, like Tony’s other recordings, is available at gigs. Cornish Blue is also available from the Headland Hotel website. Tony presents sophisticated and high quality musical entertainment through his outstanding keyboard skills and warm, relaxed vocal style. He performs a very wide repertoire from classic songs of the 1930’s and 40’s, through the great music of the 50’s and 60’s right up to the most contemporary jazz and pop material. Tony has built up an extensive repertoire of material, both vocal and instrumental, and is therefore able to cater for a very wide range of musical tastes. Apart from his regular hotel engagements, Tony frequently plays for weddings and other functions and is able to perform specially requested material through prior arrangement with the client. With respect to weddings, Tony has played for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions and also performing for evening wedding celebrations. Tony provides a completely self-contained act with professional portable digital piano and high quality PA system. Although a solo performer, Tony recreates the full sound of ensembles from big bands and orchestras to smaller jazz and pop groups. His music ranges from emotional ballads to up-tempo swing and Latin styles together with blues, funk and popular songs. He offers a flexible approach tailored to suit different venues or functions. The music may be quiet and unobtrusive, setting the mood for restaurants, or much more lively and extrovert as required for large venues, cabaret or dancing. Apart from his wide vocal repertoire, Tony also plays a comprehensive range of instrumental music, many with full rhythm section backing, including medleys specifically designed for dinner-dances. Tony is equally happy to play a hotel or restaurant grand piano if this is preferred.
